Alspaugh Walks Off Okemos in Diamond Classic Semifinal
Grand Ledge defeated Okemos 3-2 on Wednesday, thanks to a walk-off single from Senior Aiden Alspaugh. The Comets battled back from a one run deficit in the final frame.
Okemos got on the board in the first inning to take the early lead. Neither team scored a run until the sixth inning.
In the sixth, Junior Owen Smith singled to leadoff the frame. After a Smith steal, Junior Cole Mance reached on a groundball that scored Smith, tying the game at 1.
After a scoreless seventh, Okemos was able to regain the lead, after a double and an error resulted in a run, 2-1 Okemos.
With their backs against the wall, the Comets needed to answer. Junior Nathan Droste led off the inning with a four-pitch walk, followed by a bunt single by Senior Noah Warren, moving Droste to third. Next pitch, Droste scored on a sacrifice fly by Senior Logan Todd, which also moved Warren to second. After an intentional walk to Senior Kaden Nowak, Alspaugh laced a single to center, scoring Warren and giving the Comets a walk off victory on back-to-back nights.
Warren got the start on the mound for the Comets, tossing four innings, allowing three hits, one run and striking out six. Mance tossed the final four innings in relief to earn the victory for the Comets.
